When I first visited China it was just after the country had opened up to independent travellers, and we entered from Hong Kong (then still a British colony) to Guangzho, then to Yangshuo and Guilin, south to Kunming and north via Chengdu to Xi'an and on to Beijing.
The weather wasn't great - it was still early in the year, and cold and damp - so I don't have a large number of pictures, but there are these which give a flavour of the country at the time.
I've been back since, and it's changed a lot, at least in Bejing - where once the streets were full of bicycles, now they are full of cars and consequently very polluted. It was never an easy country to travel in, but it was certainly an interesting one!
